Brian and Sarah decided to have a Minnesota North Shore elopement. It’s their home state but also a place that is very special to them. If you’ve never been to Minnesota’s North Shore, it’s easily one of the most beautiful places in the world. There’s tons of amazing hikes, places to explore, and activities to do from fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, and so much more. It’s such a unique place full of culture and charm.
After months of planning their perfect day, it was finally time to meet at sunrise to begin their elopement day. We chose a spot call Hollow Rock near Grand Portage. It’s a place that none of us had been before but is so beautiful. It’s a rocky beach that you can hunt for agates on which is one of Sarah’s favorite activities. Plus there’s a unique sea stack right off the beach that has a hollow spot in it where the sun can rise through.
This morning we had a very foggy and eerie setting along the Lake Superior shore which isn’t uncommon for the area. It was so beautiful though and made for such fun and unique photos to start their elopement. We spent the morning climbing along the rocky cliffs, searching for agates, skipping rocks, and enjoying a slow morning together.
We then drove to Grand Marais to explore another awesome rocky shoreline and a famous lighthouse location. The fog looked so amazing here and the sun was breaking in and out at times. I put up the drone at one point and captured some of my favorite photos from their day.

After the morning we drove up to Gunflint Lodge to start getting ready for their ceremony with their parents. They had so many amazing details that were unique for their elopement. I loved capturing these. As the bags with their initials was made by one of their moms.

After everyone was ready, we all loaded into a side by side to drive up to a trailhead. The trailhead was a short hike to a secluded lake in the forest. The ceremony was held on a small dock with the lush tree covered hills and lake as a backdrop. It was such a peaceful, quiet and beautiful scene. Their parents gathered round them as they exchanged their vows to one another and committed themselves to one another.

After their ceremony we explored around in the woods for a bit as it was raining and looked so amazing. The rain adds so much lushness and colors to the greens all around. I had fun capturing some portraits of them being playful and hiding under the umbrellas. Once the rain calmed down a bit, it was time for the big adventure we were all excited for.
Brian and Sarah hopped in a canoe on the lake they just got married at to enjoy their first paddle as husband and wife. It was perfect as their was no one else anywhere near us and the water was so calm. I stood on the shore and captured photos with my camera as they had fun paddling around the lake taking it all in. Shortly after I put up my drone to capture some of my favorite photos of all time. It was one of the most unique Minnesota experiences as Brian had to portage the canoe into this spot earlier that day. It was so worth it!

After we got done with canoeing around on the lake, we jumped back into the side by side and headed back to the cabins. We met up with their parents to have a short celebration and face time some other family members that weren’t able to be there. It was such a fun and sweet moment for them. After we pop some champagne with the group and did a little cheers.
The rain was really starting to hammer down so before Brian and Sarah called it a night, they got on their rain jackets and we went out onto the dock at the lodge for one last hoorah. They danced around in the rain as I captured their joy. They sat on the edge of the dock and splashed in the water laughing with each other like little kids. It was such a fun and special moment. Sarah even put on her tall rain boots and waded around in the waters to climb onto a rock with the beautiful lake and wilderness in the background. It was the perfect end to their moody and romantic Minnesota North Shore elopement.
